Congress leaders in Tamil Nadu have issued a pointed warning to their coalition partner, the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), threatening to resign from the state cabinet if the party fails to back Congress leader Rahul Gandhi as its prime ministerial candidate for the 2029 general elections. The warning comes amid TVK's continued push to project its own leader, Chief Minister Vijay, as a prospective prime ministerial candidate, a stance that has evidently unsettled its Congress allies within the ruling coalition.

Speaking at an event on Saturday, Tamil Nadu Tourism Minister S Rajesh Kumar stated that both Congress ministers serving in the state cabinet would step down from their positions if TVK does not extend its support to Gandhi ahead of the 2029 Lok Sabha elections. Kumar was unequivocal in his messaging, asserting that the Congress party would not compromise on its position and reiterating that Gandhi remains the only candidate the party would support in the national elections.

The remarks mark a notable escalation in tensions between two parties that only recently came together to form a government following Tamil Nadu's assembly elections. The newly formed TVK, led by actor-turned-politician Vijay, emerged as a major political force by winning 108 seats in the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. Following that electoral outcome, TVK formed the state government with the backing of several allied parties, including the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), the Congress, the Communist Party of India (CPI), and the Communist Party of India (Marxist), or CPI(M).

The coalition arrangement has positioned Congress as a junior but important partner in the Tamil Nadu government, lending legislative support in exchange for a role in the state's administration, including cabinet berths for its representatives. However, Kumar's comments suggest that this cooperation at the state level does not extend to an endorsement of TVK's national ambitions, particularly its apparent efforts to position Vijay as a prime ministerial contender ahead of the next general elections.

The friction highlights the broader complexities that often arise in India's coalition politics, where parties may align closely on state-level governance while maintaining sharply divergent ambitions and loyalties at the national level. With the 2029 general elections still some years away, the disagreement between Congress and TVK over prime ministerial leadership could serve as an early indicator of potential strain within the Tamil Nadu coalition, even as both parties continue to govern together at the state level for the time being.
