Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Mizoram on September 13, 2025, to inaugurate the 51.38-km Bairabi-Sairang broad gauge railway line, a significant milestone in the Centre’s Act East policy to enhance Northeast connectivity. During a public meeting at Aizawl’s Lammual at 10 am, Modi will flag off the first Rajdhani Express connecting Aizawl to Delhi, alongside new train services to Kolkata and Guwahati. This marks Modi’s second visit to Mizoram since 2014, following his 2017 trip to commission the Tuirial hydroelectric project. The visit also includes inaugurating two educational institutions and laying foundation stones for six central projects.
The Rs 8,213.72-crore railway project, sanctioned in 2008-09 and completed in 2025, links Aizawl to Assam’s Silchar and integrates Mizoram into India’s railway network for the first time. Executed by Northeast Frontier (NF) Railway, the line features 48 tunnels, 55 major bridges, and 87 minor bridges, with the 114-meter-tall Bridge No. 144 near Sairang being India’s tallest pier railway bridge. Once operational, it will reduce travel time from Aizawl to Guwahati from 16 hours by road to 12 hours by train and to Silchar from 7 hours to 3 hours.
The railway is expected to boost passenger and freight movement, spur tourism, and create employment opportunities, fulfilling a long-standing aspiration of Mizoram’s residents. The line, commissioned in June 2025 after passing safety inspections, is an engineering marvel, with tunnels spanning 25% of the track. Enhanced connectivity will strengthen economic integration with the rest of India, aligning with the Centre’s focus on Northeast development.

Security has been tightened across Mizoram, with state police, BSF, and CRPF units on high alert in Aizawl. Traffic management includes 'no parking' zones along the PM’s convoy route, and the Aizawl Municipal Corporation has directed roadside businesses to close temporarily. The state government has urged residents and employees to attend the public meeting in large numbers. Following the Aizawl events, Modi will travel to Manipur, his first visit since the ethnic violence outbreak in May 2023.
