A magnitude 6.3 earthquake struck near the town of Te Anau in New Zealand's South Island, prompting authorities to issue a tsunami warning as officials assessed the potential impact of the seismic activity. The earthquake occurred in an area near Fiordland, a popular tourist destination known for its dramatic landscapes and remote coastal environment. Emergency agencies urged residents and visitors to remain alert and follow official safety instructions.
According to the New Zealand National Emergency Management Agency, the earthquake's epicentre was located approximately 40 kilometres north of Te Anau. The town serves as a gateway to Fiordland National Park and attracts visitors travelling to the region's natural attractions. Authorities issued the tsunami warning as a precautionary measure while monitoring conditions following the undersea seismic event.
International monitoring agencies also recorded the earthquake, though their estimates of its strength differed slightly. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) and the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) reported the earthquake at magnitude 5.9, with the tremor occurring at a depth of more than 50 kilometres. Officials continued to analyse data to determine the full effects of the quake.
