Former India captain and BCCI president Sourav Ganguly has been appointed head coach of the SA20 team Pretoria Capitals for the 2026 season, marking his debut as a head coach in professional cricket. The announcement, made on Sunday, sees Ganguly succeed former England batter Jonathan Trott, who stepped down from the role on Saturday after the team’s lackluster performance in the 2025 season.
The Centurion-based franchise, owned by JSW Sports, which also co-owns the IPL’s Delhi Capitals, expressed enthusiasm about Ganguly’s appointment. “The Prince is all set to bring a royal flair to the Capitals camp! We are ecstatic to announce Sourav Ganguly as our new head coach,” the team posted on Instagram. Ganguly, who served as JSW’s director of cricket since last year, brings a wealth of experience, having previously been the team director for Delhi Capitals between 2018 and 2019 before assuming the BCCI presidency.
Under Trott’s leadership in the 2025 SA20 season, Pretoria Capitals struggled, securing only two victories in 10 group matches and finishing fifth in the six-team T20 league, missing the knockout stages. The franchise acknowledged Trott’s contributions, stating, “Jonathan Trott, forever grateful for your leadership and unwavering dedication to the team. All the best on your next adventure!”
