India’s T20I captaincy debate has intensified ahead of the team’s upcoming white-ball tour of England and Ireland, with reports suggesting that current skipper Suryakumar Yadav could face pressure over his position. While recent reports had identified Shreyas Iyer as a leading candidate to take over the role, fresh developments indicate that wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson has also emerged as a strong contender for the captaincy in the shortest format of the game.
The speculation comes amid contrasting performances from India’s senior T20 players during the ongoing edition of the Indian Premier League. Suryakumar has struggled for consistency with the bat, while both Samson and Iyer have enjoyed productive campaigns. Samson, who joined Chennai Super Kings ahead of the 2026 season, has delivered several impactful performances and strengthened his case with consistent run-scoring during the tournament.
According to reports, selectors are closely monitoring performances in the IPL before finalising the squad for the England and Ireland series scheduled for June and July. Samson’s previous leadership experience with Rajasthan Royals is believed to have added weight to his candidacy. Though he is not captaining Chennai this season, his calm leadership style and ability to handle pressure situations have reportedly impressed decision-makers within Indian cricket circles.

A report by Dainik Jagran stated that Samson’s biggest advantage in the race is his continuous presence in India’s T20I setup since the 2024 T20 World Cup. The Kerala batter has established himself as a regular member of the squad and has delivered strong performances at the international level. In 62 T20 internationals, Samson has scored 1,399 runs, including three centuries and six half-centuries, while also playing a role in India’s successful T20 World Cup campaign earlier this year.
Meanwhile, Iyer’s supporters point to his excellent form in domestic and franchise cricket, particularly his performances for Punjab Kings this season. However, reports suggest that his absence from India’s T20I side since December 2023 may work against him in the immediate captaincy race. Selectors are believed to view a direct return to the squad alongside a leadership appointment as a significant step, despite Iyer’s reputation and experience as a captain in franchise cricket.
The report further claimed that the Board of Control for Cricket in India selection committee may continue backing Suryakumar for the upcoming T20I assignments in England and Ireland. However, another disappointing run with the bat could trigger a leadership change before India’s next major ICC event. With multiple senior players performing strongly and competition intensifying, the coming months could prove decisive in shaping the future leadership structure of India’s T20 side.
