Indian cricket star Mohammed Siraj returned to a hero’s welcome in Hyderabad on Wednesday, greeted by throngs of adoring fans at Rajiv Gandhi International Airport after his match-defining performance in the drawn Test series against England. The 31-year-old fast bowler, who emerged as the series’ leading wicket-taker, was mobbed by supporters chanting his name and seeking selfies, celebrating his pivotal role in India’s thrilling 2-2 series draw.
Siraj, dressed in sharp black casuals, landed in Mumbai from London alongside team fielding coach T Dilip before catching a connecting flight to Hyderabad. In Mumbai, fans at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport swarmed him for photos and autographs, but Siraj swiftly moved to the domestic terminal. Upon arriving in his hometown, the reception was even more electric, with crowds waving banners and singing tributes to the “Hyderabad Express.”
The pacer’s standout moment came in the fifth Test at The Oval, where his relentless bowling on the final day clinched a dramatic six-run victory for India—the narrowest in the nation’s Test history. Defending just 35 runs, Siraj took five wickets in England’s second innings, finishing with a match haul of nine, including key dismissals of Jamie Smith and Gus Atkinson. His series tally of 23 wickets across 185.3 overs in five matches underscored his stamina and skill, especially in the absence of Jasprit Bumrah, rested for workload management. “He’s a captain’s dream, giving everything every spell,” said India skipper Shubman Gill post-match. Siraj himself exuded confidence, stating, “I always believe I can win the game from any point.”

The Hyderabad Cricket Association (HCA) plans a felicitation ceremony for Siraj, who may remain in the city for some time. “It’s a matter of pride for us that he performed so brilliantly,” an HCA official said, hinting at celebrations to honor their local hero. Siraj’s journey, from humble beginnings as the son of an auto-rickshaw driver to a Test cricket linchpin, resonates deeply with fans. His resilience, highlighted by overcoming past criticism and a dropped catch in the series, has cemented his status as a national icon.
As Hyderabad celebrates, Siraj’s fiery performance—marked by sharp seam movement and a career-best series—has not only squared the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy but also ignited pride across India.
