Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta announced on Thursday that the government will make “all-out efforts” to resolve issues surrounding the ban on end-of-life vehicles, acknowledging the emotional attachment some residents have to keepsake vehicles, such as those gifted by loved ones. Speaking at a Van Mahotsav event, Gupta noted that many such vehicles, often low-mileage, are cherished as mementos. “The pain of Delhi’s people is understandable, and we will raise their voice wherever necessary,” she assured.
The ban, enforced since July 1, 2025, stems from a 2018 Supreme Court ruling prohibiting diesel vehicles over 10 years and petrol vehicles over 15 years in Delhi, alongside a 2014 National Green Tribunal order barring public parking of vehicles older than 15 years. Refueling restrictions for these vehicles are now in place, and reports indicate authorities have impounded some overage vehicles.
Gupta criticized previous governments for failing to address air pollution, which she linked to the persistence of such issues. She highlighted ongoing environmental measures, including water sprinklers, smog guns, mechanical sweeping machines, and a plan to plant 70 lakh saplings in 2025 to combat dust and improve air quality.
