Veteran India fast bowler Mohammed Shami remains determined to make a comeback to the national team despite being out of the selectors' plans since the ICC Champions Trophy in 2025. Shami, who was the leading wicket-taker at the 2023 ODI World Cup, has continued to perform consistently in domestic cricket and is preparing for the upcoming season with renewed focus. His childhood coach, Mohammed Badruddin, said the experienced pacer remains highly motivated and physically fitter after shedding five kilograms since last season.

Speaking about Shami's prospects, Badruddin said the 35-year-old still has plenty to offer Indian cricket. He noted that Shami is ready to return whenever the team requires his services and remains committed to representing the country. According to his coach, the pacer's positive mindset and determination have remained unchanged despite his absence from the national squad over the past year.

Shami backed up his comeback hopes with impressive domestic performances last season, claiming 37 wickets in seven Ranji Trophy matches before taking another 15 wickets in seven Vijay Hazare Trophy games. However, those performances were not enough to earn him a recall. Meanwhile, India's pace attack has faced challenges, with Harshit Rana and Prasidh Krishna dealing with injuries and newcomer Gurnoor Brar struggling to make an impact during the tour of England.

Badruddin believes Shami's experience would have been valuable in overseas conditions, particularly in England where seam bowlers generally receive greater assistance. He also suggested that India could benefit from the veteran's expertise during the 2027 ODI World Cup in South Africa, where pace bowlers with experience are expected to play a crucial role due to the conditions.

Earlier, Shami also paid tribute to former India vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane following his retirement from all formats of cricket. In a message shared on Instagram, Shami praised Rahane's career, describing it as one built on "class, discipline and unwavering commitment." He thanked the veteran batter for his contributions to Indian cricket and wished him success in the next phase of his career.
