Political parties, including AAP and Congress, fiercely criticized the Delhi Police on Monday for allegedly using excessive force against Staff Selection Commission (SSC) aspirants protesting at Ramlila Maidan over mismanagement in recruitment exams. The demonstrations, held on Sunday, saw students and trainers demanding fair and efficient conduct of SSC examinations, citing issues like abrupt cancellations, server crashes, and exam centers located up to 500 km from candidates’ homes. However, the Delhi Police denied claims of a baton charge, asserting that no excessive force was used.
Former Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia shared a video on X showing police personnel pushing and dragging protestors. “The BJP’s ‘Lathi-Leela’ at Ramlila Maidan brutally targeted SSC students and teachers. The Modi government fails at providing jobs but excels at lathi-charging youth,” Sisodia posted, accusing the central government of suppressing dissent. The Congress-affiliated National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) echoed the sentiment, stating on X, “For demanding fair SSC recruitment, the Modi government had students thrashed. They can’t curb unemployment but are quick to silence youth.” NSUI pledged solidarity with the protestors, amplifying their call for justice.
A senior Delhi Police officer clarified that around 1,500 protestors gathered at Ramlila Maidan, but 100 refused to disperse after the permitted time despite repeated requests. “We detained 44 protestors, but there was no lathi-charge,” the officer insisted, countering allegations of brutality. The detentions sparked outrage on social media, with posts on X condemning the police action and highlighting the students’ grievances.

The SSC exam controversies, including technical glitches and logistical failures, have fueled frustration among aspirants, who see the protests as a fight for their future. As political parties rally behind the students, the incident has intensified scrutiny on the Modi government’s handling of youth unemployment and exam reforms.
