West Bengal BJP President Samik Bhattacharya has called for a National Investigation Agency (NIA) probe into a brutal assault on party MP Khagen Murmu and MLA Sankar Ghosh, who were viciously attacked while aiding flood and landslide victims in Jalpaiguri's Nagrakata area. The incident, occurring on Monday, has intensified tensions in the region, with both leaders now recovering at a private hospital in Siliguri after sustaining serious injuries.
Bhattacharya, addressing a packed press conference in Kolkata, labeled the attack as a "pre-planned conspiracy" aimed at sowing religious discord and instilling fear in north Bengal's communities. "This was no random violence; it was orchestrated to divide people along religious lines and terrorize our supporters," he thundered, pointing fingers at alleged illegal Bangladeshi immigrants and Rohingya infiltrators as the perpetrators. He slammed the state police for their alleged inaction, claiming they failed to provide even basic security despite the leaders' high-profile visit to the disaster-struck zone.
The BJP chief further accused the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) of masterminding a series of such attacks to manipulate the upcoming special intensive revision of electoral rolls, creating a pervasive atmosphere of intimidation ahead of key political maneuvers. "The TMC's dirty tactics won't cow down our workers. Attacking BJP leaders only exposes their desperation," Bhattacharya declared defiantly, vowing that the party would not back down from serving the people.

The assault unfolded as Murmu and Ghosh, accompanied by local BJP activists, were distributing relief materials to families devastated by recent floods and landslides in Nagrakata, a sensitive border area prone to ethnic and communal flare-ups. Eyewitnesses described a mob suddenly descending on the convoy, pelting stones and wielding sticks, forcing the leaders to flee for their lives. Videos of the chaos, now circulating widely on social media, show the BJP duo being rushed to safety amid cries of panic.
This incident adds to a string of violent clashes in West Bengal's political landscape, where BJP-TMC rivalries have often spilled into the streets. Opposition parties have long alleged that the state government turns a blind eye to attacks on their cadres, while TMC counters that such claims are fabricated to malign the administration. As demands for a central probe grow louder, the event could further polarize the state's fractious politics, drawing national attention to the brewing unrest in north Bengal.
