Suryakumar Yadav has opened up about the humble beginnings of his cricket career, recalling that his first earnings from the sport were just Rs 15,000 for an entire Under-15 tour with Mumbai. The amount may appear modest compared with the financial rewards associated with international cricket today, but for Yadav, it marked one of his earliest steps toward a professional career. Speaking to former India cricketer Aakash Chopra, Yadav revealed that he eventually spent the entire amount on cricket equipment because he did not have a bat sponsor at the time.

“I think it was 15,000 when I played U-15 for Mumbai for the first time. It was for the entire tour. I must have spent it. At that time, I did not have any bat sponsor, so I used to spend all my earnings on buying cricket equipment,” Yadav said during the conversation. His recollection highlights the contrast between his early days, when he had to use his own earnings to maintain his equipment, and his current status as one of Indian cricket's most recognisable T20 players.

Yadav's journey from junior-level cricket in Mumbai to becoming India's T20I captain has been marked by persistence. He eventually established himself as a key player for the national side in the shortest format and went on to lead India to their third T20 World Cup title in 2026. India had previously won the tournament in 2007 under MS Dhoni and in 2024 under Rohit Sharma. Under Yadav's leadership, India secured another title, adding another significant achievement to his international career.

However, Yadav's position in the Indian team has changed considerably since that triumph. A few months after leading India to the 2026 T20 World Cup title, the 35-year-old was left out of the national side. His recent form, particularly with the bat, has been a concern, while the selectors are also understood to be considering the longer-term requirements of the team ahead of the next global cycle. Yadav's difficult IPL campaign with Mumbai Indians further added to questions surrounding his consistency and his immediate international future.

Despite losing his place in the national setup, Yadav has not given up on the possibility of returning to India colours. When asked about his plans for a comeback, he maintained that his focus remains on working hard and improving his performances rather than worrying about selection. “Look, I'm putting in all the hard work and doing everything I can. If things go well, then everything will fall into place,” Yadav said. The response reflects his approach to the setback as he looks to regain the form that previously made him one of India's most important T20 batters.

Yadav's last appearances for India in the Test and ODI formats came in 2023, while his international career in recent years has been primarily associated with T20 cricket. He continues to remain an important part of the Mumbai Indians setup, but consistent performances in domestic cricket could now determine whether he gets another opportunity with India. A report by news agency ANI, citing a BCCI source, said the governing body has not ruled out his return. “Doors for Suryakumar Yadav are still open. He is not currently in the scheme of things, but he remains eligible to come back if he scores runs in domestic cricket consistently,” the source said. For Yadav, the path back to the national team therefore appears straightforward but demanding: score consistently, regain form and give the selectors a strong reason to reconsider their decision.
