The Union Cabinet on Wednesday passed a resolution commending Prime Minister Narendra Modi after he became India’s longest-serving elected Prime Minister in consecutive terms, marking what the government described as a significant political milestone in the country’s parliamentary history.
The resolution was adopted during a Cabinet meeting in New Delhi, where members reportedly gave a standing ovation to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to mark the occasion. The recognition came on the same day he surpassed the record held by India’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, in terms of uninterrupted tenure as an elected head of government.
According to official figures cited by the government, Modi completed 4,399 consecutive days in office on Wednesday, narrowly overtaking Nehru’s elected tenure of 4,398 days. The comparison specifically refers to periods served after general elections, excluding Nehru’s tenure as head of the interim government between 1947 and 1952, before India’s first general elections were held.

Modi first assumed office on May 26, 2014, after the Bharatiya Janata Party secured a majority in the Lok Sabha elections. He went on to begin his second term on May 30, 2019, and was sworn in for a third consecutive term on June 9, 2024, extending his leadership through successive electoral mandates.
The Cabinet resolution highlighted the continuity of governance under his leadership and described the milestone as a reflection of sustained electoral support across multiple general elections. It also emphasized policy continuity and administrative stability as defining features of his tenure.
Political observers note that such comparisons between leaders across different historical eras are often complex due to differences in political structures, electoral cycles, and constitutional frameworks. However, the government has framed the milestone as a symbolic moment in India’s democratic history, underscoring the length of uninterrupted elected leadership in the modern parliamentary system.
