Mala Roy, a Member of Parliament from the All India Trinamool Congress, surrendered before a Kolkata court on Wednesday in connection with a case related to the alleged assault of Bharatiya Janata Party workers on May 4, the day the West Bengal Assembly election results were announced. Following her appearance before the court, Roy, her son Anirban, and 22 others were granted bail by the Chief Judicial Magistrate’s court in Alipore.
The case was registered at the Tollygunge Police Station based on a complaint filed by a BJP worker. According to police, the accused were booked under multiple provisions of the Arms Act and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including charges related to criminal intimidation, voluntarily causing hurt, and allegedly using criminal force to outrage the modesty of a woman. Authorities stated that the incident reportedly took place at Sadhu Taracharan Road in south Kolkata.
Representing Roy in court, advocate Dibyendu Bhattacharya argued that the allegations against the TMC leader, her son, and the other accused persons were false and politically motivated. He said an FIR had been lodged immediately after the alleged incident and that Roy and several co-accused voluntarily surrendered before the court on Wednesday to cooperate with legal proceedings. The court subsequently granted them bail after hearing submissions from both sides.

Police officials alleged that Roy, along with her son and other party workers, had been armed with firearms and sharp weapons during the confrontation that reportedly occurred around 6 pm on May 4, just hours after the assembly election results were declared. Investigators further claimed that one of the accused individuals assaulted a female BJP worker during the incident. Police said one person had earlier been arrested in connection with the case before the remaining accused sought relief from the court through surrender and bail applications.
Roy currently serves as the TMC MP from Kolkata Dakshin and also holds positions as a councillor and chairperson of the TMC-led Kolkata Municipal Corporation. The case has attracted political attention amid continuing tensions between the ruling TMC and the BJP in West Bengal, where clashes between party workers have frequently been reported around election periods and political rallies.
The BJP has repeatedly accused TMC workers of engaging in political violence following election results, while the ruling party has often rejected such allegations as politically motivated. Roy had not issued a public statement on the matter at the time of reporting. Police officials indicated that investigations into the allegations would continue and that further legal proceedings would depend on the findings of the inquiry and witness testimonies.
