Two leaders from the Indian National Congress were turned away from the residence of Mayawati in Lucknow after arriving without a prior appointment, triggering political embarrassment for the party and prompting disciplinary action from the Congress leadership. The incident took place on Tuesday when Congress leaders Rajendra Pal Gautam and Tanuj Punia attempted to meet the Bahujan Samaj Party chief at her residence.
According to reports, the two Congress leaders informed Mayawati’s security staff that they wished to meet the senior leader, who is regarded as one of India’s most influential Dalit political figures. However, after the request was reportedly conveyed to Mayawati, her team informed them that she was unwilling to meet them. The two leaders later avoided detailed responses to media questions regarding the purpose of the visit and described it as a courtesy call intended to enquire about her health and well-being.
Speculation quickly emerged over whether the visit was politically motivated or linked to possible opposition alliance discussions ahead of future elections in Uttar Pradesh. Tanuj Punia, however, denied reports suggesting that he and Gautam had gone to convey any message from Rahul Gandhi. Punia told reporters that such claims were incorrect and stated that he was already participating in Rahul Gandhi’s programme in Raebareli at the time.

The Congress leadership distanced itself from the episode soon after it became public. Uttar Pradesh Congress in-charge Avinash Pande said the visit was not authorised by the party and confirmed that show-cause notices had been issued to the two leaders involved. State Congress president Ajay Rai also clarified that any formal political outreach or meeting with a leader of Mayawati’s stature would normally require prior approval and coordination from the party’s top leadership.
The development comes amid continuing efforts by opposition parties to build broader alliances against the Bharatiya Janata Party in Uttar Pradesh. The Congress and Samajwadi Party had jointly contested the 2024 Lok Sabha elections in the state and managed to significantly reduce the BJP’s dominance by winning more than half of Uttar Pradesh’s 80 parliamentary seats. Political observers have long speculated about whether the Congress may again attempt to bring the Bahujan Samaj Party into a larger opposition alliance.
Mayawati, however, has repeatedly maintained distance from both the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance and the opposition INDIA bloc in recent years. Although the BSP had allied with the Samajwadi Party during the 2019 Lok Sabha elections and secured notable gains, the party has since chosen to contest elections independently. The BSP has never entered into a formal pre-poll alliance with the Congress in Uttar Pradesh, and recent statements from Mayawati have indicated her preference to continue pursuing an independent political path ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections.
