The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in Chennai has issued an orange alert for the Nilgiris and the Western Ghats regions of Coimbatore, forecasting very heavy rainfall up to 24.4 cm on Sunday.
The deluge, driven by an east-west trough at sea level and an upper air cyclonic circulation over north interior Karnataka, is part of an active southwest monsoon spilling over from Kerala into Tamil Nadu’s hilly districts.
On Saturday, Nilgiris recorded 11.8 cm of rainfall, while Chinnakalar in Coimbatore saw 11.2 cm, with Vint Worth Estate and Cincona logging 8.4 cm and 8.2 cm, respectively.

Heavy showers are also expected to persist in Theni, Dindigul, and Tenkasi through Monday, July 21, with light to moderate rain forecast for up to 50% of Tamil Nadu’s weather stations.
B. Amudha, Head (Additional In-Charge) of RMC Chennai, noted that an upper air circulation over south coastal Andhra Pradesh and a trough near Chennai’s latitude are fueling widespread rain. Authorities urge residents in hilly areas to stay vigilant for potential landslides and disruptions, as the wet spell continues to cool parts of the state.
