In a fiery political move, West Bengal Leader of the Opposition Suvendu Adhikari has demanded a Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the state's electoral rolls to eliminate what he claims are illegal voters, including Rohingyas and Bangladeshi Muslim immigrants.
Addressing a rally in Siliguri after leading a protest march to Uttarkanya — the northern secretariat branch — Adhikari alleged large-scale manipulation of voter lists and called for a clean-up, mirroring the ongoing SIR process in Bihar.
"Those Hindus who fled religious persecution in Bangladesh are refugees in the eyes of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. They have nothing to fear," Adhikari said. At the same time, he reassured Indian Muslims that they are not the target of the BJP’s demand, stating, "The BJP stands firmly with you."

However, he was adamant that "no illegal immigrant" would be allowed to influence elections in Bengal.
Accusing the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) of failing the people, Adhikari slammed the Mamata Banerjee government over unemployment, deteriorating law and order, and a lack of development in north Bengal.
He cited recent incidents of violence against women — including the murder of a doctor and the assault of a law student — to claim that women are unsafe under TMC rule. The protest was organized by the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) demanding safety for women.
Taking a direct shot at the Chief Minister, who addressed her party’s Martyrs' Day rally in Kolkata the same day, Adhikari declared, "She will be a former chief minister after the 2026 assembly elections."
He also alleged government inaction over key issues in north Bengal, including the non-allocation of land for a proposed AIIMS and the poor condition of tea garden workers, accusing the state of trying to sell off tea estate land.
Adhikari’s sharp rhetoric has intensified the political temperature in West Bengal, with the SIR demand likely to trigger a fresh wave of controversy across party lines.
