Congress Rajya Sabha member Randeep Singh Surjewala escalated his criticism of the BJP-led Haryana government, declaring that unchecked drug abuse has permeated every level of society in the state, from remote villages to urban residential colonies and bustling towns. He portrayed the epidemic as an existential threat to the younger generation, attributing its unchecked proliferation directly to governmental indifference and ineffective policies.

Through a comprehensive post on X, Surjewala painted a grim picture of communities ravaged by addiction, noting reports from rural areas where elderly villagers are compelled to maintain informal records of youths succumbing to overdose and related complications. These fatalities, he stressed, transcend cold statistics, embodying profound familial devastation, irreparably shattered households, and the extinguishment of promising futures for countless individuals.

The opposition leader highlighted a stark disconnect between official proclamations and ground realities, pointing out that numerous villages are designated "drug-free" in government documents despite persistent and visible substance abuse issues. He contended that anti-narcotics drives initiated by the administration are largely performative, confined to administrative paperwork, media announcements, and superficial publicity stunts rather than substantive enforcement or rehabilitation efforts.

Surjewala further alleged the entrenchment of sophisticated drug syndicates that have constructed robust distribution channels across Haryana, facilitating the widespread availability of synthetic narcotics as well as the diversion of pharmaceutical medications for illicit use. This network, he claimed, extends its reach into virtually every district and village, operating with impunity amid purported governmental negligence.

Holding the state leadership accountable for what he described as a catastrophic failure in safeguarding public welfare, Surjewala warned that the escalating menace is systematically eroding family structures and jeopardising the long-term prospects of Haryana's youth demographic. He called for immediate and decisive intervention to dismantle the drug ecosystem and restore protective measures for vulnerable populations.
