Polling is being held on Tuesday, October 6, across six constituencies in West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Assam, setting the stage for a closely watched round of by-elections only months after major political changes in the states. Voters are casting ballots in five Assembly constituencies — Nandigram and Rejinagar in West Bengal, Madurantakam and Dharapuram in Tamil Nadu, and Thattanchavady in Puducherry — along with the Nagaon Lok Sabha constituency in Assam. Voting began at 7 am and is scheduled to continue until 6 pm, while counting of votes will take place on October 9. The contests are being watched as early electoral tests for governments and political formations that emerged from this year's Assembly elections. The BJP-led government in West Bengal and Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) government in Tamil Nadu are particularly under scrutiny, while the results in Assam and Puducherry will also provide political parties with constituency-level indications of their support.
West Bengal has two important contests in Nandigram and Rejinagar, with the BJP facing different political equations in the two constituencies. Nandigram became vacant after Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, who had won the seat, retained Bhabanipur. The BJP has fielded Hasirani Rath, the mother of Chandranath Rath, a former associate of Adhikari who was killed shortly after the Assembly election victory. The contest has also taken an unusual shape after the Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress faction decided to support Congress candidate Milan Pradhan following the withdrawal of its own nominee. Another Trinamool faction led by Ritabrata Banerjee has fielded Mohammad Eteshamul Haque, while the CPI is also contesting. The outcome will be closely observed because Nandigram has acquired considerable political significance in Bengal politics, particularly after the BJP's return to power in the state.
Rejinagar presents a different electoral challenge, with the BJP, Congress, CPI(M), two Trinamool factions and the Aam Janata Unnayan Party in the contest. The seat was won in the Assembly election by Humayun Kabir, who subsequently formed his own party and later retained another constituency, resulting in the Rejinagar vacancy. His son, Golam Nabi Azad, is contesting the bypoll for the AJUP. The constituency has a significant minority population and has historically witnessed political competition and tensions, prompting enhanced security arrangements for polling. The Election Commission has deployed central forces and state police personnel to secure polling stations. BJP leaders have sought to focus their campaign on development, while rival parties have raised their own local and political issues. The multi-cornered contest means the final result will depend not only on the performance of individual parties but also on how votes are distributed among competing candidates.

Tamil Nadu's Madurantakam and Dharapuram by-elections are being watched particularly closely because they mark the first major electoral contest for actor-turned-politician Vijay's TVK since the party came to power. Both constituencies fell vacant after AIADMK legislators K Maragatham Kumaravel and P Sathyabama resigned from the Assembly and joined TVK. The two seats are reserved constituencies, and the bypolls have developed into contests involving TVK, AIADMK, DMK and the CPI, alongside several smaller parties and independent candidates. In Madurantakam, 27 candidates are in the fray, including 17 independents, while Dharapuram has 22 candidates, 14 of them independents. The constituencies have 2,13,788 and 2,23,306 registered voters respectively. Vijay campaigned extensively in both seats, drawing attention to the importance his government attaches to the contests.
The Tamil Nadu contests have also generated sharper political exchanges during the campaign, with rival parties questioning the TVK government's record after it took office earlier this year. The bypolls come only around four months after the TVK-led administration was formed, making the outcome relevant to the party's efforts to establish itself at the constituency level. The AIADMK, meanwhile, has an additional stake because the vacancies were created by legislators who had won their seats on its tickets before moving to TVK. The contests are therefore being viewed through multiple lenses: the performance of the new ruling party, the ability of established Dravidian parties to retain their support, and the organisational strength of the candidates in individual constituencies. However, the results of two bypolls cannot by themselves establish a statewide electoral trend. The Election Commission has also put detailed polling arrangements in place, including designated polling stations and electronic voting machines, while eligible employees in the two constituencies have been granted a paid holiday for polling day.
The remaining contests in Puducherry and Assam add another dimension to the six-seat bypoll exercise. In Puducherry, voting is taking place in Thattanchavady, where the result will be watched in the context of the Union Territory's ruling NDA government. In Assam, the Nagaon Lok Sabha constituency is witnessing a contest involving the BJP, Congress and AIUDF. The BJP is seeking to regain the parliamentary seat, while Congress is defending its position in a constituency that has acquired added significance following political developments involving former MP Pradyut Bordoloi. Across the six seats, the contests involve different combinations of ruling parties, opposition groups, breakaway factions and newer political formations. Voting on October 6 and counting on October 9 will provide the immediate results, but political parties are likely to examine the margins, turnout and constituency-level voting patterns for clues about their organisational position. The bypolls are not a substitute for a full Assembly or Lok Sabha election, yet they offer an early snapshot of how political equations have evolved after the major elections earlier this year.
