Shehzad Poonawalla criticised the government over what he described as the growing financial burden on the middle class in remarks made shortly before his official resignation from the Bharatiya Janata Party. In a video posted on Instagram, Poonawalla said the middle class was effectively being treated as an “ATM” for the government. Poonawalla’s remarks focused on the economic pressures faced by middle-class households. He argued that ordinary taxpayers were bearing a disproportionate burden and used strong language to describe what he saw as the government’s approach towards the segment.
His comments came shortly before he formally announced his departure from the BJP. In the video, Poonawalla said the middle class was being “looted” and questioned the financial pressures placed on people who work, earn and pay taxes. His reference to the middle class as an “ATM” was intended to underline his criticism that the government repeatedly turns to taxpayers for revenue while providing insufficient relief in return. The remarks gained attention because of their timing. Poonawalla’s criticism was made immediately before his official resignation from the BJP, adding political significance to comments that would otherwise have been framed primarily as an economic critique.
His departure marks a change in his political association after his stint with the ruling party. Poonawalla has been a vocal political commentator and BJP spokesperson, frequently defending the party and attacking opposition parties on political and policy issues. His latest remarks represent a sharply different tone, particularly because they directly question the government’s handling of the financial concerns of the middle class. The middle class has remained a politically important constituency, with issues such as taxation, inflation, household expenses, employment and disposable income frequently featuring in public debate.

Poonawalla’s comments placed these concerns at the centre of his criticism, arguing that taxpayers should not be viewed primarily as a source of government revenue. His use of the phrase “ATM” also drew attention online, as the expression conveyed his contention that the government expects the middle class to continue contributing financially without adequately addressing its concerns. However, the remarks reflect Poonawalla’s political position and should not be treated as an independent assessment of government taxation or economic policy.
The comments came as Poonawalla prepared to formally sever his association with the BJP. His resignation and criticism of the government are therefore likely to be viewed together, particularly because he chose to highlight middle-class economic pressures immediately before announcing his political departure. Poonawalla’s remarks add another dimension to the political debate over the economic concerns of India’s middle class. While he has framed the issue as one of excessive financial pressure and inadequate relief, the broader questions surrounding taxation, government spending and middle-class welfare remain matters of continuing political debate.
