Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma sharply criticized West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, daring her to implement the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) to prove her concern for Bengalis. Responding to Banerjee’s claims of harassment against Bengali migrants in BJP-ruled states, Sarma alleged she only cares about “Muslim Bengalis.”
“In Assam, Bengali Hindus are protected and integrated into Assamese society, practicing their language and religion freely,” Sarma said Thursday night. He challenged Banerjee, stating, “If you care for Bengalis, why not implement CAA in West Bengal?” He further accused her of selective concern, saying, “Mamata Banerjee likes only Muslim Bengalis.”
In a post on X, Sarma wrote, “Bengali Hindus are safe in Assam, but TMC only cares about Bengali Muslims. Why oppose CAA if they love Bengali Hindus?”

This follows Banerjee’s Kolkata protest on Thursday, where she accused BJP governments of targeting 22 lakh Bengali migrant workers, labeling them Rohingya and sending them to detention camps. “Bengal fought for India’s freedom. Is West Bengal not in India?” she said, urging migrants to return for safety.
The clash highlights tensions over citizenship and identity, with Sarma touting Assam’s inclusivity while questioning Banerjee’s stance on CAA.
