Fresh tensions have surfaced within the opposition INDIA alliance after remarks by Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi regarding former Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan triggered criticism from Left parties. The controversy emerged following the circulation of an audio recording from an INDIA bloc meeting held on June 8, raising questions about the cohesion of the opposition alliance ahead of future political battles.
In the audio clip, Gandhi was heard saying that he would not hug Vijayan because of their ongoing political rivalry in Kerala. He reportedly stated that while political parties within the alliance may cooperate at the national level, he could not overlook the political contest between the Congress and the Communist Party of India (Marxist) in the state. His remarks quickly became a topic of discussion among alliance partners and political observers.
The Congress and the CPI(M) have long been principal rivals in Kerala politics, despite being partners within the INDIA alliance at the national level. The relationship became more complex after the Congress-led opposition succeeded in ending Vijayan's tenure following two consecutive terms in office. While both parties continue to work together on broader opposition issues, competition in Kerala has remained intense and often confrontational.

Responding to the controversy, Vijayan downplayed the significance of the issue, noting that hugging has never been a customary part of their political interactions. He said meetings between them are generally limited to formal greetings or handshakes. However, he expressed concern over the political message conveyed by Gandhi's comments, arguing that the remarks reflected a broader attitude toward alliance politics and cooperation among opposition parties.
Leaders from the Left camp reacted strongly to the statement. CPI(M) General Secretary M. A. Baby said no one had asked Gandhi to embrace Vijayan and urged him instead to refrain from making demands related to the former chief minister's arrest. Senior Left leaders, including Brinda Karat and John Brittas, argued that the issue was not about personal gestures but about maintaining mutual respect and political clarity within the opposition coalition.
The Bharatiya Janata Party seized on the controversy to question the unity of the INDIA alliance. BJP spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla described the opposition grouping as an alliance of convenience rather than a united political front. The episode has once again highlighted the challenges facing the INDIA bloc as it attempts to balance regional rivalries with its broader objective of presenting a coordinated opposition platform at the national level.
