Congress leader and Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi met Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) president C Joseph Vijay over lunch at the chief minister’s residence in Neelankarai, Chennai, on Saturday. The meeting took place ahead of Gandhi’s student outreach programme, Chhatron Ki Goonj, scheduled at Island Grounds later in the day. The interaction has drawn political attention as it marks the first meeting between the two leaders since TVK formally joined the INDIA bloc. Their discussions also come amid continuing opposition protests over alleged electoral irregularities and demands for the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
Gandhi arrived in Chennai from New Delhi earlier on Saturday before travelling to Vijay’s residence for the lunch meeting. The meeting followed the formal naming of the Secular Social Justice Victory Alliance, which includes TVK, the Congress, the Indian Union Muslim League and the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi. The alliance’s recent political developments have brought renewed focus on cooperation among opposition parties in Tamil Nadu. The meeting also came a day after the ruling alliance secured victories in the Madurantakam and Dharapuram Assembly bypolls. Gandhi had previously attended Vijay’s swearing-in ceremony as chief minister on May 10, 2026, and the latest interaction adds to the political engagement between the Congress leadership and the Tamil Nadu government.
The meeting took place against the backdrop of the Congress’s campaign on electoral issues. Gandhi has repeatedly criticised the Election Commission over electoral rolls and what his party describes as irregularities in the electoral process. Opposition parties have also been protesting in New Delhi over the issue commonly referred to as “vote chori”, while demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. The lunch meeting brought together two leaders whose parties are now part of the opposition alliance in Tamil Nadu, although details of the discussions between Gandhi and Vijay were not publicly specified in the report. The timing has nevertheless placed the interaction under scrutiny as political parties prepare to address electoral concerns and strengthen their public outreach.

Later in the day, Gandhi is scheduled to interact with students at Chennai’s Island Grounds as part of the Congress’s youth outreach initiative, Chhatron Ki Goonj, also known by its Tamil title, Maanavargalin Kural. Tamil Nadu Congress Committee chief Manickam Tagore said between 10,000 and 20,000 students who had registered and received QR codes were expected to attend. According to Tagore, the programme would address issues affecting students in Tamil Nadu, including the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test, employment opportunities, girls’ and women’s education, and the Union government’s education policy. The organisers have described the programme as an interactive session rather than a conventional political rally, with students expected to raise questions about education costs, jobs and competitive examinations.
The Congress and its student organisations have promoted the event through banners, flyers and digital posters across Chennai, including around Island Grounds. Security arrangements have also been strengthened across the city ahead of Gandhi’s visit and Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s scheduled programmes on October 11. Officials said approximately 15,000 police personnel had been deployed under a five-tier security arrangement led by Chennai Police Commissioner A Amalraj. Additional checks have been introduced along travel routes and near the event venue to manage security and movement. Entry to the student interaction is restricted to registered participants carrying QR codes, and separate entry corridors have been arranged for male and female students.
Members of the general public will not be permitted inside the venue, according to the reported security arrangements. After completing the student interaction, Gandhi is scheduled to leave for Chennai Airport at around 8.30 pm and board a flight to New Delhi at 9.40 pm. His visit combines political engagement with Vijay and a public-facing programme focused on students’ concerns, placing alliance politics and youth issues at the centre of the day’s activities. While the lunch meeting has attracted attention because of TVK’s entry into the INDIA bloc, the student event is intended to provide a platform for discussing education, employment and examination-related challenges faced by young people in Tamil Nadu.
