In a fiery political statement, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has backed US President Donald Trump’s controversial remarks calling India a “dead economy,” intensifying the opposition's attack on the Modi government. Speaking to reporters on Thursday, Gandhi said Trump’s assessment reflects a harsh global truth that the Indian government is unwilling to admit. “Yes, he is right. Everybody knows this except the Prime Minister and the finance minister. The Indian economy is dead. I’m glad President Trump has stated a fact,” said Gandhi, who currently serves as the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha.
Taking to social media, Gandhi accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of single-handedly wrecking the economy. In a sharply worded post on X, he wrote: “THE INDIAN ECONOMY IS DEAD. Modi killed it.” He went on to blame the collapse on the Adani-Modi nexus, demonetisation, a flawed GST regime, the failure of the ‘Assemble in India’ initiative, the destruction of MSMEs, and the continued suffering of farmers. Gandhi also said that Modi has crushed the future of India’s youth by creating an economy with no jobs.
The remarks come at a time when the opposition is mounting a renewed offensive against the government’s economic policies, following Trump’s announcement of a 25% tariff hike on Indian imports. Trump, in a fresh post on Truth Social, lashed out at India’s trade ties with Russia and doubled down on his “dead economy” comment. “I don’t care what India does with Russia. They can take their dead economies down together, for all I care,” Trump posted. He also criticized India’s high tariffs, calling them some of the highest in the world, and claimed the US has done “very little business” with India as a result.

Trump didn’t spare Russia either, taking aim at former President Dmitry Medvedev, warning him to “watch his words” and calling him a “failed leader” who is entering “very dangerous territory.” With both domestic and international criticism mounting, the Modi government now finds itself under sharp scrutiny over its handling of the economy, trade policy, and international alliances.
