A 90-minute meeting between Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi and Trinamool Congress national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee on Wednesday has fuelled speculation about closer political coordination between the Congress and the Trinamool Congress within the opposition INDIA bloc. According to sources familiar with the discussions, the Trinamool Congress conveyed its commitment to strengthening the opposition alliance and expressed its acceptance of Rahul Gandhi’s leadership role within the INDIA grouping.
Sources, however, indicated that the discussions primarily focused on enhancing opposition unity rather than any immediate organisational restructuring. The meeting was held at 10 Janpath in New Delhi and came a day after Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee met Congress Parliamentary Party chairperson Sonia Gandhi. The interaction between the two senior leaders attracted attention after photographs of their meeting and public embrace circulated widely on social media and among political circles.
Sources said Congress has made it clear that it is not actively pursuing any merger proposal with the Trinamool Congress. According to the same sources, the party’s position is that any such initiative would have to originate from the Trinamool itself. No official statement suggesting a merger has been issued by either party. The latest round of discussions follows a recent meeting of the INDIA bloc in Delhi, where opposition leaders stressed the need for greater coordination and a united strategy to challenge the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in upcoming political contests.

The interactions between Congress and Trinamool leaders are being viewed as part of broader efforts to improve cooperation among opposition parties. Political observers note that relations between the Congress and the Trinamool Congress have often been marked by both cooperation and competition, particularly in West Bengal.
However, recent engagements between senior leaders from both parties suggest an attempt to strengthen common ground at the national level in the interest of opposition unity. While speculation over a possible merger or deeper alliance has intensified following the meetings, neither party has publicly confirmed any such plans. For now, the discussions appear focused on reinforcing the INDIA bloc and presenting a more coordinated opposition front against the BJP ahead of future electoral battles.
