Congress leader and Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, on Saturday launched a sharp attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, describing them as “two sides of the same coin.” Addressing a campaign rally in Sreerampore in Hooghly district, Gandhi alleged that both leaders have failed to address the aspirations of common people, particularly in terms of employment and economic opportunities.
Gandhi criticised the Prime Minister for what he described as policies favouring the wealthy over the poor. He contrasted the current economic situation with earlier periods, stating that West Bengal had a stronger industrial base during previous administrations. He also accused Mamata Banerjee of neglecting job creation, claiming that both leaders are more focused on their own interests than on addressing unemployment among youth.
The Congress leader further alleged the existence of “competitive corruption” between the Bharatiya Janata Party at the national level and the All India Trinamool Congress in the state. He claimed that various scams, including chit fund and recruitment-related controversies, have implicated leaders from the ruling party in West Bengal, while also accusing both parties of fostering a climate of violence.

Raising questions about employment promises, Gandhi pointed to commitments made by Mamata Banerjee in 2011 regarding job creation. He claimed that millions of youth in the state remain unemployed and have applied for allowances, portraying this as a sign of worsening economic conditions. He argued that the state government has failed to deliver on its assurances over the past decade.
Gandhi also alleged the existence of an understanding between the Prime Minister and the Chief Minister, claiming that a lack of direct political confrontation has resulted in limited investigative action against Banerjee. Drawing a comparison with his own legal challenges, he said he has faced multiple cases and extensive questioning, while questioning the absence of similar scrutiny against the West Bengal Chief Minister.
The remarks come amid heightened political activity in West Bengal, where opposition parties are intensifying their campaigns. Gandhi reiterated that the Congress continues to position itself in direct opposition to the BJP, while also targeting regional parties it accuses of failing to provide effective governance or accountability.
