Punjab BJP President Sunil Jakhar launched a scathing attack on the Aam Aadmi Party-led state government, accusing it of delivering a mere 26 days of average employment per worker under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) in the current fiscal year, significantly short of the statutory guarantee of 100 days and exposing what he termed the administration's profoundly anti-poor orientation.
Jakhar demanded the immediate release of a comprehensive white paper detailing alleged widespread corruption in the MGNREGA scheme over the past four years under AAP rule, pointing out that even in previous years the average hovered around just 38 days, and insisted that the Bhagwant Mann government had utterly failed to honor its pre-election commitments to the rural poor through effective implementation.
The sharp criticism was leveled in the context of the AAP government's decision to convene a one-day special session of the Punjab Vidhan Sabha on December 30, 2025, ostensibly to oppose the Central government's newly introduced Viksit Bharat Guarantee for Rozgar and Ajeevika Mission (Gramin) Act, which replaces the two-decade-old MGNREGA framework with enhanced provisions including up to 125 days of guaranteed work and stricter anti-corruption measures.

Jakhar derided the special session as yet another elaborate propaganda exercise designed to divert public attention from pressing governance failures, including the alarming deterioration in law and order, near-daily reports of murders, rampant extortion rackets, unresolved promises on anti-sacrilege legislation referred to a select committee, stalled agricultural policy formulation, and unanswered questions from prior special sessions regarding alleged MLA poaching attempts.
He further accused the Mann administration of misleading vulnerable rural households by collecting forms and thumb impressions without delivering substantive employment, suggesting the government's discomfort stems from the Centre's resolve to eliminate corruption in the scheme, while urging lawmakers to prioritize discussions on real crises burdening Punjab's citizens rather than what he described as theatrical distractions that only impose additional financial strain on the state's exchequer.
