Unitree Robotics has emerged as one of the world’s leading manufacturers of humanoid and quadruped robots, building a business now valued at around $9 billion ahead of its planned stock market debut. Reuters reported that several technologies underpinning Unitree’s successful robot dogs can be traced to research funded by US military programmes, including the US Army Research Laboratory’s Robotics Collaborative Technology Alliance. The research was publicly released to encourage wider scientific and technological progress, meaning Unitree did not necessarily obtain the technology through confidential channels.
The company’s affordable Go2 robot, launched in 2023 at about $1,600, helped Unitree rapidly expand its presence in the quadruped robotics market. Researchers involved in the original US-funded programme told Reuters that the dimensions and design of the Go series closely resemble the Mini Cheetah developed at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Unitree founder Wang Xingxing had also cited earlier MIT and University of Pennsylvania research in his 2016 master’s thesis while exploring improvements to quadruped robot designs.
The US Army-funded Robotics Collaborative Technology Alliance operated between 2010 and 2020 and brought together researchers from institutions including the University of Pennsylvania, MIT, Boston Dynamics and NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory. Research conducted through the programme helped advance lighter and more responsive quadruped robots. While US researchers contributed key innovations, Chinese manufacturers were able to commercialise similar technology at much greater scale, supported by dense manufacturing networks and extensive component supply chains.

Unitree’s growth illustrates the broader challenge facing the US robotics industry in converting research breakthroughs into mass-produced commercial products. Company filings show that Unitree sold more than 5,500 humanoid robots and 18,000 quadruped robots last year. By comparison, US companies have struggled to produce comparable robots at scale. Analysts and researchers cited by Reuters said China’s manufacturing ecosystem, access to components and willingness to support lower-margin advanced industries have helped companies such as Unitree move faster.
The company’s rise has also attracted scrutiny over the potential military use of its technology. Unitree says its robots are designed for civilian applications and has previously joined an industry pledge against weaponising robots. However, Chinese state media has shown Unitree robots operating alongside People's Liberation Army troops, while modified versions of its machines have been displayed with weapons. In June, the Pentagon placed Unitree on a list of Chinese military companies, describing it as a contributor to China's defence industrial base.
US restrictions alone may not be enough to close the robotics manufacturing gap, experts said. Researchers involved in the original Army programme argued that Washington should focus on helping domestic companies scale production while strengthening supply chains for motors, actuators, magnets and other components. Unitree’s success has therefore become an example of a wider technological race in which the US retains considerable strength in research and innovation, while China has demonstrated a significant advantage in manufacturing scale and commercialisation.
