Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched a transformative wave of development in Assam’s Darrang district on Sunday, laying the foundation stones for health and infrastructure projects worth an impressive Rs 6,300 crore. The ambitious initiatives aim to bolster healthcare access, connectivity, and economic growth in the region, marking a significant milestone in Assam’s journey toward progress.
Among the flagship projects is the construction of the Darrang Medical College and Hospital, complemented by a nursing college and a General Nursing and Midwifery (GNM) school. These healthcare facilities, with a combined investment of Rs 570 crore, are set to enhance medical education and healthcare services, addressing critical needs in Assam’s underserved areas. The projects are expected to create opportunities for aspiring medical professionals while improving healthcare delivery for local communities.
On the infrastructure front, Modi laid the foundation for the 2.9 km-long Narengi-Kuruwa bridge, estimated at Rs 1,200 crore, which will improve connectivity within the state. Additionally, the 118.5 km-long Guwahati Ring Road project, with a budget of Rs 4,530 crore, will connect Kamrup and Darrang districts in Assam with Ri Bhoi in Meghalaya, fostering seamless regional integration and boosting trade and mobility.

Later in the day, the Prime Minister is scheduled to inaugurate a Rs 5,000-crore bamboo-based ethanol plant and a Rs 7,230-crore Petro Fluidised Catalytic Cracker Unit at the Numaligarh Refinery in Golaghat district. These projects underscore Assam’s growing role in India’s energy sector, leveraging sustainable resources like bamboo to drive economic and environmental benefits.
Modi’s visit to Assam began on Saturday evening, when he arrived in Guwahati to attend the birth centenary celebrations of Bharat Ratna awardee Bhupen Hazarika, the legendary singer-composer who left an indelible mark on Indian culture. During his address in Darrang, the Prime Minister expressed anguish over alleged insults by the Congress party toward Hazarika, referencing remarks made by Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge in 2019.
Kharge had criticized the Modi government’s decision to confer the Bharat Ratna on Hazarika, calling him merely a “singer” and suggesting spiritual leader Shivakumara Swami as a more deserving candidate. Modi also alluded to historical grievances, claiming that wounds from former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru’s policies during the 1962 Chinese aggression still linger among Assam’s people.
Highlighting Assam’s rapid progress under Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leadership, Modi noted that the state is achieving a remarkable growth rate of approximately 13%. “Assam is emerging as a powerhouse of development in India,” he said, crediting the state’s leadership for its forward momentum. The slew of projects launched on Sunday reflects the central government’s commitment to transforming Assam into a hub of opportunity and prosperity.
The Prime Minister’s program in Mangaldoi began at 11:30 AM, drawing large crowds and local dignitaries eager to witness the historic moment. After concluding his engagements in Assam, Modi is set to depart for Kolkata from Jorhat airport on Sunday evening, wrapping up his two-day visit to the state.
These initiatives are poised to reshape Assam’s landscape, driving economic growth, improving healthcare access, and strengthening connectivity. As the state continues its upward trajectory, the projects signal a new era of development for Assam and its people.
