Union Minister Piyush Goyal on Tuesday accused the DMK-led Tamil Nadu government of targeting Hindu traditions, welcoming the Madurai bench of Madras High Court’s verdict allowing the lighting of lamps on the “Deepathoon” at Thiruparankundram temple. He alleged that the decision exposes the “hatred of the INDI Alliance towards Hindu Dharma” and reflects a broader pattern of undermining religious practices in the state.
Goyal claimed that Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin, his son Udhayanidhi Stalin, and other senior DMK leaders have repeatedly berated and derided Sanatan Dharma. He recalled that in September 2023, Udhayanidhi Stalin had made a controversial demand against Hindu traditions, and shortly after, the lighting of lamps on Thiruparankundram Hill, associated with Lord Kartikeya, was prevented.
The Union Minister pointed out that even in 2024, the state government did not permit the continuation of this centuries-old tradition. Devotees had approached the court against the government’s decision, and on December 1, 2025, Justice GR Swaminathan ruled in their favor, allowing the practice to continue.

Goyal also criticized the impeachment motion against Justice Swaminathan, describing it as evidence of intimidation against the judiciary by political forces. “The so-called upholders of the Constitution are trying to influence the judiciary,” he said, accusing the INDI Alliance of pursuing an anti-constitutional agenda.
Calling the episode a “wake-up call” for the people of Tamil Nadu and the nation, Goyal urged citizens to reject what he described as appeasement politics by the DMK and its allies. He emphasized that the verdict reaffirms the judiciary’s role in protecting religious freedoms and traditional practices.
The minister’s remarks highlight the growing political debate over the intersection of religion and governance in Tamil Nadu, with critics alleging that the ruling party has consistently interfered with longstanding Hindu customs, while supporters argue the court’s decision restores religious rights for devotees.
