Student Council election campaigning at Panjab University took an unusual turn when supporters of the Independent Students Organisation (ISO) used a person dressed in a gorilla costume to draw attention to the growing monkey menace on the university campus. The campaign was organised in support of ISO vice-presidential candidate Vipul Bharti and combined humour with an issue that students describe as a persistent concern.
The campaigners moved through different parts of the campus carrying banners and posters and raising slogans in support of Bharti. The person in the gorilla costume accompanied the students during the campaign, including near the girls' hostel area, attracting attention from those on campus. Supporters said the unusual approach was intended to create a strong visual message and bring greater focus to the presence of monkeys around the university.
According to the students, monkeys frequently enter hostel premises and other campus areas, where they can snatch food and belongings from students. They argued that the problem has become more than an everyday nuisance and requires a permanent solution. The campaigners called for the university administration and other concerned authorities to take practical measures to address the issue.

Bharti described the monkey population as a major concern for students and claimed that around 800 to 1,000 monkeys are present in and around the university. He alleged that the animals regularly take students' belongings from hostel areas and have increasingly become a safety concern. The claims come amid student council campaigning, with candidates using campus-related issues to connect with voters.
The ISO supporters said the purpose of the “Gorilla Campaign” was to draw attention to a problem they believe has affected daily life on campus. By using a striking and unconventional campaign symbol, the students sought to make the monkey issue more prominent in discussions surrounding the student council elections. With the elections underway, the monkey menace has emerged as an unusual campaign issue at Panjab University. Students supporting the campaign are seeking concrete action from the administration to manage the situation and improve safety around hostels and other campus areas.
