Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Saturday urged students to contribute to the goal of building a Viksit Bharat by 2047 while relying on constitutional and democratic methods to bring about social change. Addressing the convocation ceremony of Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar University in Lucknow, he explained Dr BR Ambedkar’s message of “Educate, Agitate and Organise” as a call to gain knowledge, question injustice and work collectively for change through constitutional means rather than violence.

Rajnath Singh referred to Dr Ambedkar’s final speech to the Constituent Assembly, noting his emphasis on pursuing social and economic objectives through constitutional methods. He said that when democratic and constitutional avenues are available, violence, anarchy and unconstitutional approaches cannot be justified. The Defence Minister described such approaches as a “grammar of anarchy” that society must move away from while pursuing reform and addressing injustice.

Speaking about the changing global environment, Singh urged students to remain committed to continuous learning and adaptability. He noted that rapid advances in technology and innovation are creating new opportunities, making the ability to acquire new skills increasingly important. He also stressed that universities should develop young minds around the principles of justice, equality, liberty and fraternity while strengthening their practical thinking and problem-solving abilities.

The Defence Minister emphasised the importance of collective participation in nation-building and called upon students to work as part of “Team India”. He maintained that while individual efforts can contribute to national progress, a shared resolve can accelerate development significantly. Singh urged the students to align their knowledge, skills and efforts with the broader objective of building a developed India by 2047.

Singh also highlighted what he described as progress in India’s education, research and innovation ecosystem over the past 12 years. He pointed to a doubling of research and development expenditure, the introduction of the National Education Policy after 34 years and achievements by Indian youth in international Olympiads, start-ups, unicorns and advanced technology. He further noted India’s improved position in the Global Innovation Index and its emergence as the world’s third-largest start-up ecosystem.

The Defence Minister assured students that the government would continue efforts to create an environment where young people can explore, innovate, experiment and develop solutions for society. He said education should go beyond acquiring information by developing the ability to think, understand and solve practical problems. Singh’s address combined a call for constitutional participation with an appeal to young people to use education, innovation and collective effort in contributing to India’s development.
