The Opposition is considering its next course of action as the Centre prepares to introduce a stricter anti-paper leak legislation in Parliament amid continued political confrontation over the NEET examination controversy. The proposed Bill is expected to be tabled during the second week of the Monsoon Session, with the government seeking stronger legal measures to prevent examination irregularities and punish those involved in paper leaks.

The issue has already disrupted proceedings in the first week of the parliamentary session, with Opposition parties protesting over the NEET paper leak allegations and the reported police action against protesting students. The government’s move to bring the new legislation is expected to test whether discussions between the ruling side and the Opposition can resume or whether the deadlock will continue.

The proposed legislation was cleared by the Union Cabinet on Friday and aims to strengthen provisions under the Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Act, 2024. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in a video message, said the government would introduce the Bill and attempt to pass it at the earliest during the ongoing parliamentary session. The move is part of the Centre’s response to concerns over examination security and fairness.

However, Opposition parties under the INDIA bloc have maintained that legal reforms alone cannot address the issue without accountability from those in positions of responsibility. Leaders from the alliance have insisted that any discussion on the NEET paper leak controversy must be preceded by the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. They have accused the government of avoiding responsibility over the examination crisis.

A senior Opposition leader said the alliance would closely monitor the government’s actions before deciding its strategy inside Parliament. INDIA bloc parties have continued to coordinate their approach through meetings held before parliamentary sittings, with members remaining united on their key demands, including accountability for the alleged irregularities and action against those responsible for the police response during student protests in Delhi on July 20.

As the government prepares to introduce the tougher legislation, the coming parliamentary sessions are expected to witness further debate over examination reforms, student concerns, and political responsibility. While the Centre is focusing on strengthening legal safeguards against paper leaks, the Opposition continues to press for broader reforms and accountability measures before engaging in detailed discussions on the issue.
