Former Tamil Nadu BJP chief K Annamalai has raised concerns over the extensive security arrangements announced by the Centre for the upcoming NEET UG re-test scheduled for June 21, 2026. In a post on social media platform X, he argued that the measures could heighten stress among students rather than ease the examination process.
The controversy centres on what Annamalai described as unusually stringent protocols put in place by the Ministry of Education. These include two-tier escort arrangements involving CRPF and CISF personnel, Indian Air Force-assisted airlift logistics, multiple layers of CCTV surveillance with AI-based monitoring, and biometric as well as facial recognition checks at entry points.
According to Annamalai, the examination security framework also involves multiple stages of frisking and layered oversight mechanisms, including reported real-time monitoring linked to the Prime Minister’s Office. He questioned the necessity of such an elaborate system for a competitive entrance examination, suggesting that it resembles high-security arrangements typically associated with sensitive defence operations.

He further stated that while ensuring the integrity of examinations is important, excessive security measures may not address the core issues affecting the exam process. Instead, he warned that such steps could unintentionally create additional pressure for candidates appearing for the re-test. The remarks have sparked discussion around the balance between examination security and student welfare, particularly in high-stakes national entrance tests.
While supporters of strict protocols argue they help prevent malpractice, critics like Annamalai contend that overly rigid systems risk affecting the mental well-being of students. The Ministry of Education has not yet publicly responded to the specific criticisms raised, but the NEET UG re-test continues to be closely watched amid broader debates on examination reforms and fairness in India’s competitive academic system.
