Former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti's visit to the under-construction AIIMS project in Awantipora has triggered a political controversy, with the ruling National Conference (NC) criticizing the move and describing it as an "unconstitutional step" and an "unhealthy precedent." The visit drew attention after photographs and videos showed the People's Democratic Party (PDP) leader interacting with officials and reviewing the progress of the prestigious healthcare project.
During her visit, Mufti held discussions with officials associated with the project and examined plans related to its construction and future operationalization. She later described the visit as a matter of personal and emotional significance, stating that the establishment of AIIMS in Kashmir had been a dream of her late father, former Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed. She also highlighted concerns regarding delays in the completion of the project and stressed the importance of expediting work to ensure that advanced healthcare facilities become available to residents of the region.
The National Conference reacted strongly to the visit, questioning the authority under which Mufti conducted what appeared to be a review of the project. Senior party leaders argued that elected representatives who are not part of the government do not possess the executive authority to officially assess or review ongoing government projects. NC chief spokesperson Tanvir Sadiq alleged that the PDP was being politically reactivated ahead of important developments involving the National Conference leadership and its engagements with the central government.

The controversy has added another chapter to the ongoing political rivalry between the National Conference and the People's Democratic Party, two major regional parties in Jammu and Kashmir. Both parties have frequently clashed over governance, development initiatives, and political representation in the Union Territory. The AIIMS project, one of the most significant healthcare infrastructure initiatives in the region, has often been at the center of public discussions due to delays and its expected impact on healthcare delivery.
As the political debate continues, the focus remains on the completion of AIIMS Awantipora, which is expected to significantly strengthen healthcare services in Kashmir. While Mufti's supporters view her visit as an effort to draw attention to project delays, critics maintain that such reviews should remain within the purview of the government and authorized officials. The episode has once again highlighted the competitive political environment in Jammu and Kashmir as parties seek to shape public perception ahead of future political developments.
