Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and DMK president M.K. Stalin has launched a sharp criticism against actor-turned-politician Vijay over his recent speech in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly, alleging that the address resembled a cinematic performance rather than a serious discussion on governance and public issues. The exchange has added fresh political heat to the already tense relationship between the ruling DMK and Vijay’s emerging political outfit.
The controversy began after Vijay, who represents Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), delivered a speech in the Assembly that drew widespread attention for its dramatic tone, expressive delivery, and stylised presentation. According to reports, DMK legislators walked out during the address in protest, but Vijay continued speaking without interruption. The incident quickly gained traction both inside the House and on social media platforms, where clips of the speech circulated widely.
During his address, Vijay also recreated a gesture associated with MK Stalin, a moment that was widely shared online and became a focal point of the political debate that followed. Supporters of Vijay described the speech as engaging and impactful, arguing that his communication style helped connect with younger audiences. However, critics within the DMK dismissed it as theatrics that were more suited to cinema than legislative proceedings.

Reacting strongly to the developments, M.K. Stalin questioned the nature of the speech and the way it was recorded inside the Assembly. He reportedly objected to what he described as a “filmy” presentation of proceedings, suggesting that the Speaker should not have permitted the Chief Minister’s address to be filmed in a manner that resembled a movie sequence. Stalin’s remarks implied that the Assembly’s seriousness was undermined by allowing performance-style delivery and uninterrupted recording during the session.
The DMK chief’s criticism has further intensified the political confrontation between the ruling party and Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam. TVK, led by Vijay, has been attempting to establish itself as a significant political force in Tamil Nadu, with the actor leveraging his popularity in the film industry to build a broader political base. However, his entry into active politics has also drawn scrutiny from established parties, particularly over his communication style and public appearances in formal legislative settings.
The incident has also sparked a wider debate over the evolving nature of political communication in Tamil Nadu, where film personalities have historically transitioned into politics. While such leaders have often used dramatic or mass-appeal-oriented communication styles, critics argue that legislative platforms demand restraint and procedural seriousness. Supporters of Vijay, however, maintain that modern political discourse must adapt to changing audience expectations and communication formats.
As tensions continue to rise between DMK and TVK, the controversy reflects deeper political undercurrents in the state ahead of future electoral contests. Observers note that the exchange is not just about a single speech but also about competing narratives of political legitimacy, style, and substance in Tamil Nadu’s highly competitive political landscape.
