The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) intensified its attack on the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) over the chaotic organisation of Lionel Messi's GOAT Tour event at Salt Lake Stadium on December 14, 2025, accusing the government of exploiting the football legend's visit for electoral propaganda ahead of the 2026 West Bengal Assembly polls. Leader of the Opposition Suvendu Adhikari demanded the immediate arrest of TMC ministers Aroop Biswas and Sujit Bose, alleging misuse of public funds and resources, while calling for a court-monitored judicial probe and an Enforcement Directorate (ED) investigation into financial irregularities.
Adhikari criticised the "exorbitant" ticket pricing and inflated costs for essentials like water bottles sold at Rs 200 inside the venue, urging full refunds for affected attendees. The BJP claimed the event's mismanagement—marked by overcrowding, inadequate facilities, and last-minute changes—reflected TMC's prioritisation of political mileage over public welfare, with Messi's appearance leveraged to bolster the party's image.
The Congress and Left parties joined the criticism, dismissing the TMC government's internal inquiry as an "eyewash" and demanding independent accountability. They echoed concerns over poor crowd management, safety lapses, and alleged profiteering, highlighting how the high-profile event descended into disorder despite massive public expenditure.

The TMC rejected the allegations, asserting that a government-led probe is already underway to address organisational shortcomings. Party leaders defended the initiative as a boost for Kolkata's global visibility and sports tourism, while downplaying opposition claims as politically motivated ahead of elections.
The controversy has overshadowed Messi's brief Kolkata stop—the opening leg of his India tour—where logistical issues prompted an early departure to the next city. Fans expressed frustration over unfulfilled expectations, including limited interactions and venue chaos.
As political parties trade barbs, the incident has reignited debates on governance, event management, and the use of celebrity visits in electoral strategies in West Bengal, with calls growing for transparent investigations to restore public trust.
