West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of attempting to enrol “outsiders” as voters ahead of the upcoming state assembly elections, escalating the political confrontation in the poll-bound state.
In a letter to Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, Banerjee alleged that BJP agents were involved in submitting a large number of Form 6 applications, which are used for new voter registrations. She claimed these were not routine applications but part of a “mischievous ploy” to include non-residents in West Bengal’s electoral rolls.
The allegations come amid claims by Trinamool Congress leaders that thousands of such applications were filed in a short span of time, raising concerns over potential manipulation of voter lists. Party leaders have suggested that some of these applications may involve individuals already registered in other states, intensifying fears of what they describe as demographic interference in the electoral process.

Banerjee has further argued that such actions could undermine democratic processes and disenfranchise genuine voters. In her communication, she urged the Election Commission to intervene and ensure free and fair elections, warning that the integrity of the electoral system must be protected.
The BJP, however, has rejected the allegations and countered with its own accusations against the ruling Trinamool Congress. The party has claimed that Banerjee and her colleagues are attempting to influence the election environment and has approached the Election Commission seeking action to ensure transparency and security during polling.
The issue of voter rolls has emerged as a key flashpoint in the run-up to the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections, with both sides trading allegations of electoral malpractice. The controversy underscores heightened political tensions in the state, where electoral integrity, voter inclusion, and administrative neutrality have become central themes in the campaign narrative.
