The West Bengal government has initiated the process to abolish the Madrasah Service Commission and merge its functions with the West Bengal School Service Commission (WBSSC), a senior official said on Thursday. The proposed merger would bring the recruitment of teachers for recognised madrasas under the WBSSC framework, subject to legislative approval.
The decision was approved at a recent state cabinet meeting, but it cannot take effect immediately as changes to existing laws are required. Principal Secretary of the Education Department Binod Kumar told PTI that the government plans to complete the process within this year. The move is expected to establish a common recruitment mechanism for teachers appointed to recognised madrasas in the state.
The School Education Department is likely to introduce two separate bills in the West Bengal Assembly as part of the process. One bill will seek to repeal the West Bengal Madrasah Service Commission Act, while the other will propose amendments to the legislation governing the WBSSC. The proposed legislative changes are necessary to formally transfer the recruitment functions of the Madrasah Service Commission.

Once the bills are passed by the state assembly, they will be sent to the governor for assent. A gazette notification will then be issued to formally give effect to the changes. Until these legal and administrative steps are completed, the existing structure of the Madrasah Service Commission will continue to remain in place.
The proposed merger comes as the state government seeks to streamline the recruitment of teachers and bring greater uniformity to the selection process, officials said. Under the proposed arrangement, teacher recruitment for recognised madrasas would be conducted through the WBSSC rather than through a separate commission, subject to the required legislative and administrative approvals.
The government has publicly indicated that the Madrasah Service Commission will be abolished as part of the restructuring. Education department officials said the process is expected to move forward after the necessary bills are introduced and approved by the legislature. The final implementation will depend on the passage of the proposed legislation, gubernatorial assent and the subsequent gazette notification.
