Former Union minister Upendra Kushwaha ignited controversy on July 21, 2025, by suggesting that Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar should relinquish control of the Janata Dal (United) (JD(U)) to focus on governance. Speaking at a press conference in Patna, Kushwaha, president of Rashtriya Lok Morcha and a former JD(U) ally, claimed his remarks echoed the sentiments of "thousands of JD(U) workers" with whom he remains in contact despite leaving the party over two years ago.
Kushwaha praised Kumar as an "incomparable leader" among India’s top political figures but argued that the 75-year-old, Bihar’s longest-serving CM, should prioritize state administration. He hinted at "new hope" in Kumar’s reclusive son, Nishant, as a potential successor, though he avoided directly endorsing Nishant’s political prospects, stating, "Anyone is free to enter politics as per the Constitution."
The remarks have stirred unease within JD(U). Chief state spokesperson and MLC Neeraj Kumar emphasized that only Nitish Kumar can decide on matters involving Nishant, reaffirming the party’s trust in Kumar’s leadership. Kumar has been JD(U)’s supreme leader since its formation in 2003, often delegating the national presidency to close aides.

Kushwaha, a Rajya Sabha MP and three-time JD(U) member, announced a Rashtriya Lok Morcha rally in Patna on September 5, signaling his continued political activity. His comments have left JD(U) grappling with questions about its leadership structure and future direction as Kumar’s tenure remains under scrutiny.
