In a strategic move ahead of the Bihar Assembly elections, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar announced on Thursday that all domestic consumers in the state will receive up to 125 units of free electricity per month starting August 1, 2025. The initiative, effective from the July billing cycle, is set to benefit approximately 1.67 crore households, offering significant relief to low and middle-income families.
Kumar, the longest-serving Chief Minister of Bihar, shared the news via social media platform X, stating, “We have ensured affordable electricity for all. Now, from August 1, 2025, domestic consumers will pay nothing for up to 125 units, easing the financial burden for 1.67 crore families.” He emphasized his government’s long-standing commitment to affordable power, while also advocating for a “one nation, one tariff” policy, noting that Bihar currently procures electricity from the grid at high rates.
The announcement comes amid a political tug-of-war, with opposition leader Tejashwi Yadav of the RJD-led INDIA bloc promising 200 units of free electricity if elected. Kumar’s move has been hailed as a “masterstroke” by JD(U) leaders, who claim it will transform lives across all communities.

In a push for sustainable energy, Kumar also outlined plans to generate 10,000 megawatts of solar power within three years. Under the state-funded Kutir Jyoti Yojana, solar panels will be installed on rooftops or public spaces with residents’ consent, with full subsidies for the poorest households.
