Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has vehemently criticised the Union Information and Broadcasting Ministry for its initial decision to withhold permission for screening multiple films at the International Film Festival of Kerala (IFFK), notably the Spanish hip-hop film titled BEEF. The ministry's refusal appeared to arise from a fundamental misunderstanding of the title, interpreting "beef" solely in the context of edible meat rather than its established slang meaning in global music culture.
Addressing the issue publicly, Vijayan pointed out that in Spanish hip-hop and broader urban music scenes, "beef" denotes rivalry, feud, or artistic conflict between performers, with no connection to food or dietary practices. He remarked that the authorities seemed fixated on one narrow interpretation, stating, "For them, beef has only one meaning." After explanations clarified the film's content, the ministry reversed its stance and approved BEEF along with several other previously restricted titles, although the initial block affected six films in total.
The Chief Minister characterised the incident as a direct assault on freedom of expression and artistic autonomy, arguing that such interventions undermine the democratic principles of cultural platforms. He extended his critique to include apparent political motivations, specifically highlighting the denial of clearance for Palestinian films as evidence of the Centre's biased position on international issues involving Palestine.

Vijayan reiterated the IFFK's firm dedication to safeguarding creative freedom and resisting external pressures, affirming that the festival would persistently challenge any measures perceived as anti-democratic or authoritarian in nature. This stance positions the event as a bastion for diverse and unrestricted cinematic voices on the global stage.
Delivered ahead of the festival's primary screenings, Vijayan's comments underscore Kerala's commitment to hosting an inclusive international gathering that attracts filmmakers, critics, and audiences from around the world, fostering open dialogue through cinema unhindered by ideological constraints.
