Actor-turned-politician and Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) Chief Vijay, who recently took oath as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu on May 10 after securing a majority in the Assembly elections, has received public support from fellow actor and politician Kamal Haasan. Haasan praised Vijay’s early administrative decisions and urged that he not be viewed merely as a film star.
Speaking to reporters at Chennai airport on May 13, Kamal Haasan said that individuals from any profession are entitled to enter politics and contribute to public service. He emphasized that Vijay’s transition into governance should be seen in the context of his responsibilities as a political leader rather than his film career.
“We should not just see Vijay as a film star. He has other responsibilities as well. Anyone can come to politics from any field. It is a matter of pride that Vijay has come to power from our industry,” Haasan said, highlighting the significance of representation from the film fraternity in active politics.

Haasan also welcomed the Tamil Nadu government’s recent decision to shut down 717 Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation (TASMAC) liquor outlets located near sensitive public spaces such as schools, colleges, temples, and bus stands. He described the move as a long-pending demand that has now been acted upon by the new administration.
In a separate statement earlier, Haasan had lauded the policy change on social media, noting that liquor shops near places of worship and educational institutions had long been a concern for Tamil families. He also suggested that the government should move towards a more regulated approach to alcohol sales in the state.
The remarks come amid growing attention on Vijay’s early policy decisions as Chief Minister, with observers closely watching how the actor-turned-politician shapes governance in Tamil Nadu. Haasan’s endorsement adds to the broader public and industry reaction surrounding the new government’s initial reforms and political direction.
