Police in Jammu detained multiple Congress activists on Sunday during a protest march organized by the party’s Jammu and Kashmir unit to demand the restoration of statehood for the region. The march, led by prominent Congress leaders, was halted by authorities citing public order concerns, escalating tensions in the politically charged atmosphere.
The activists, chanting slogans and carrying banners, sought to highlight the central government’s delay in restoring statehood, revoked in August 2019 following the abrogation of Article 370. Clashes reportedly erupted as police intervened to disperse the crowd, leading to the detention of several participants. Congress leaders condemned the action, accusing the administration of suppressing democratic rights.
The detentions come amid growing unrest in Jammu and Kashmir, with opposition parties intensifying calls for statehood and greater autonomy. Authorities have not yet commented on the number of detentions or further actions, as the situation remains tense.
