Members of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) on Tuesday hailed Prime Minister Narendra Modi at a parliamentary party meeting, chanting slogans such as “Jai Modi”, “Vande Mataram”, and “Bharat Mata ki Jai” following the announcement of a major India–US trade agreement. The felicitation took place on the parliament premises during the ongoing budget session.
The celebration came after US President Donald Trump said India and the United States had agreed to a trade deal under which Washington would reduce reciprocal tariffs on Indian goods from 25% to 18%. Trump described the decision as being made “out of friendship and respect” for Prime Minister Modi, framing the agreement as a significant step forward in bilateral economic ties.
Details of the agreement were shared by President Trump on his social media platform, Truth Social. Alongside tariff reductions, Trump claimed that India would halt purchases of Russian oil. The tariff rollback follows a period of heightened trade tensions after the US administration had earlier imposed a total 50% duty on Indian goods, including a 25% component linked to India’s crude oil imports from Russia.

At the NDA parliamentary party meeting, senior Bharatiya Janata Party leaders were present, including Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, and BJP president JP Nadda. BJP National President Nitin Nabin was also formally welcomed during the gathering, which focused on party coordination amid the budget session.
Meanwhile, both houses of Parliament continued discussions on the motion of thanks to the president’s address. In the Lok Sabha, the motion was moved by Sarbananda Sonowal and seconded by Tejasvi Surya. Proceedings on Monday were marked by disruptions following sharp exchanges between NDA members and the opposition INDIA bloc during Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi’s address.
In the Rajya Sabha, BJP MP Sadanand Master moved the motion of thanks and delivered an emotional speech. The debate followed President Droupadi Murmu’s address to the joint sitting of Parliament on January 28, which formally marked the beginning of the Budget Session.
