Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday advised Raijor Dal chief and Sivasagar MLA Akhil Gogoi to conduct himself like a “mature individual” in the Assembly, marking a notable exchange on the concluding day of the Budget Session of the Assam Legislative Assembly.
The development came after Gogoi expressed disappointment on the floor of the House, stating that the Chief Minister did not acknowledge or address him during his concluding speech. Gogoi said he was present throughout the session and found it surprising that the Chief Minister neither looked at nor mentioned him in his remarks.
Responding in his closing address, Sarma congratulated Gogoi for his participation in the debate but advised him to maintain parliamentary decorum and speak in a more mature manner. His comments, while measured, carried a tone of political sharpness that drew attention from members across party lines.

The Chief Minister also remarked that Gogoi is a leader shaped by years of grassroots struggles and public movements, contrasting such a journey with those who enter politics through privilege. Referring to him as someone who did not come into public life with a “golden spoon,” Sarma’s statement was interpreted as both acknowledgment and subtle political commentary.
The exchange prompted reactions from both treasury and opposition benches, reflecting the charged atmosphere that has characterized parts of the session. Despite the pointed remarks, Sarma concluded by thanking all ministers and MLAs for their cooperation, emphasizing that healthy debate and constructive criticism remain essential pillars of democracy.
The interaction between the two leaders added a significant political undertone to the final day’s proceedings, underscoring the dynamic and often personal nature of legislative debates in Assam.
