Union Minister of State George Kurian has resigned from the Union Council of Ministers following the completion of his Rajya Sabha tenure. The resignation comes after the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) decided not to renominate him for another term in the recent Rajya Sabha elections. His departure marks a change in the composition of the Union government as the ruling party undertakes adjustments following the Upper House polls.
According to an official communication issued by the Rashtrapati Bhavan, President Droupadi Murmu accepted Kurian's resignation with immediate effect. The statement noted that the resignation was accepted on the advice of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, bringing an end to Kurian's tenure as a member of the Union Council of Ministers.
During his time in the government, Kurian served as Minister of State in the Ministry of Minority Affairs. He also held the additional responsibility of Minister of State in the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying. His tenure focused on supporting programmes related to minority welfare as well as initiatives connected to fisheries and livestock development across the country.

Kurian's Rajya Sabha term officially concluded on June 21, 2026. His exit from Parliament automatically affected his position in the government, as ministers are generally required to be members of either House of Parliament within the constitutional framework. The BJP's decision not to renominate him effectively paved the way for his departure from the Cabinet structure.
Political observers have noted that Kurian was among the few prominent Christian faces in the Union government and was widely regarded as an important representative of the community within the BJP-led administration. His resignation has therefore attracted attention beyond routine ministerial changes, particularly in states where the party has been attempting to strengthen outreach among Christian voters.
Kurian was not the only minister affected by the recent Rajya Sabha elections. Another Union minister, Ravneet Singh Bittu, was also not renominated despite his term coming to an end. The developments are being viewed as part of a broader political and organisational reshuffle within the ruling party as it prepares for future electoral and governance priorities.
