Former Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer Sujata Rout Karthikeyan formally joined the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) on Thursday, marking her entry into active politics in Odisha. She was welcomed into the party by BJD president and former Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik during an event held at the party office in Bhubaneswar. Her induction comes at a crucial time for the regional party as it seeks to rebuild its organisational strength following its defeat in the 2024 Odisha Assembly elections, which ended its uninterrupted 24-year rule in the state.
Sujata Rout Karthikeyan is the wife of former IAS officer and senior BJD leader V.K. Pandian, who has been one of Naveen Patnaik's closest associates for several years. Before entering politics, Karthikeyan served as an Odisha cadre IAS officer for nearly 24 years, holding several key administrative positions. During her tenure, she worked extensively in areas such as women’s empowerment, maternal and child health, nutrition, education, sports development, and the implementation of various welfare programmes across the state.
An alumna of the University of Delhi and Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), Karthikeyan was recognised as a high-performing student before joining the civil services. Throughout her administrative career, she was involved in policy execution, governance reforms, and public welfare initiatives. Her experience in handling development programmes and government administration has earned her a reputation as an experienced bureaucrat with a strong focus on social development.

Speaking after joining the BJD, Karthikeyan said she felt fortunate to have received the opportunity to work under the leadership of Naveen Patnaik and continue serving the people of Odisha. She stated that public service had always been her priority and expressed gratitude for being given another platform to contribute to the state's development. She also reaffirmed her commitment to working with dedication for the welfare of the people.
Political observers view Karthikeyan's entry into the BJD as a significant development for the party. With her extensive administrative background and deep understanding of governance, she is expected to strengthen the party's organisational and policy-making efforts. Her induction also adds to the BJD's experienced leadership at a time when the party is working to regain public support after losing power following more than two decades in office.
The BJD is expected to undergo organisational restructuring in preparation for future political challenges under Naveen Patnaik's leadership. Karthikeyan's transition from the civil services to politics reflects the growing trend of experienced administrators entering public life after retirement or voluntary exit from government service. Her role within the party and future political responsibilities are likely to be closely watched as the BJD charts its next phase in Odisha politics.
