The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) has criticised actor-politician Vijay over the ongoing political uncertainty in Tamil Nadu, advising him to first secure clear majority support before approaching the Governor to form government. The remarks come amid heightened political drama following a closely contested election outcome in the state.
DMK leader TKS Elangovan said that any coalition seeking to form government must demonstrate a stable majority in the legislature before making claims of governance. He argued that the Governor’s decision-making would depend on whether the group has clear numbers, and not on incomplete or shifting alliance claims.
According to Elangovan, if a single party or coalition approaches the Governor without a clear majority, they may not be invited to form the government. He said that in such cases, the Governor would wait for proof of absolute majority support in the Assembly before taking a decision. His remarks were made in response to claims by Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), which has been attempting to build a governing alliance.

The controversy intensified after TVK initially claimed majority support with backing from smaller parties, including alleged support from the Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam (AMMK). However, AMMK leader TTV Dhinakaran reportedly denied supporting the claim, alleging that a letter of support was forged. TVK has rejected these allegations and accused Dhinakaran of spreading misinformation, further escalating political tensions.
Elangovan further stated that the matter involves competing claims and legal complaints, and suggested that any dispute over authenticity of support letters should be resolved in court. He also questioned the validity of claims made when internal dissent existed within supporting parties, arguing that such inconsistencies weaken attempts to prove majority strength.
The political situation in Tamil Nadu remains fluid, with multiple parties yet to clearly align. While TVK is said to have support from the Congress and CPI(M), last-minute withdrawals by smaller parties have complicated the numbers. The Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) is expected to announce its position soon, with reports suggesting that its leader Thol Thirumavalavan may meet Vijay to discuss future support. The final outcome is still awaited as coalition negotiations continue.
