Delhi Police detained more than 30 Opposition MPs, including Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, his sister Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut, and Trinamool Congress MP Sagarika Ghose, during a protest march from Parliament’s Makar Dwar to the Election Commission (EC) office in New Delhi. The march, aimed at submitting a memorandum against the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, was halted due to lack of permission, according to police officials.
A senior police officer stated that the EC had permitted only 30 MPs to enter its premises, but the protesters arrived in “large numbers” without prior approval for the march. The detained MPs were taken to Parliament Street Police Station, with police offering to escort a limited group to the EC once names were provided. Security was heightened around the EC headquarters, with barricades, additional personnel, and quick reaction teams deployed to maintain order and manage traffic flow.

Rahul Gandhi, speaking during his detention, framed the protest as a fight to protect the Constitution and ensure “one man, one vote,” accusing the EC of enabling voter fraud. The Congress has launched a nationwide “Vote Chori” campaign, demanding digital voter lists for transparency. The EC has dismissed these allegations as “false and misleading,” while the BJP accused the Opposition of staging “political drama.” The detentions have intensified the debate over electoral integrity as India approaches future polls.
