In a bold shake-up, the Congress party has appointed Amit Chavda as the new president of its Gujarat Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC), replacing Shaktisinh Gohil, who resigned after the party’s dismal performance in recent Assembly bypolls. The All India Congress Committee (AICC) also named Tushar Chaudhary as the new Congress Legislature Party leader in the Gujarat Assembly, succeeding Chavda.
AICC general secretary K.C. Venugopal announced the immediate appointments, stating, “Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge has approved Amit Chavda as Gujarat PCC chief and Dr. Tushar Chaudhary as the legislature party leader.” The party expressed gratitude to Gohil, who stepped down after Congress failed to win either of the two bypoll seats, a stinging setback following his appointment as PCC chief in June 2023 ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
Chavda, a veteran who previously led the Gujarat Congress, took to X to express his gratitude: “Humbled by the trust of Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge ji, CPP Chairperson Sonia Gandhi ji, LoP Rahul Gandhi ji, and K.C. Venugopal ji. This is a solemn responsibility to fight for every Gujarati and uphold Congress values.” He pledged to work relentlessly to strengthen the party and advance Rahul Gandhi’s vision for Gujarat.

Tushar Chaudhary, a former Union minister and son of Gujarat’s first tribal chief minister, Amar Sinh Bhilabhai Chaudhary, steps into the legislature leadership role with a strong legacy. Having served as Gujarat Congress working president from 2007 to 2009, his appointment aims to bolster the party’s presence in the state assembly.
In a parallel move, Kharge appointed Challa Vamshi Chand Reddy to oversee the selection of District Congress Committee presidents, focusing on enhancing organizational efficiency. With Gujarat’s political landscape heating up, can Chavda and Chaudhary reverse Congress’s fortunes and challenge the BJP’s dominance.
